Desktop Search
Hi - I'm Karen Blakeman and I am giving a presentation on Tuesday 29th comparing the various desktop search tools.
My list at present includes Blinkx, AskJeeves, Yahoo, Copernic, Google, MSN and Exalead. I'd be interested in hearing about people's experiences of using these tools, and if there are any others that you find useful. (My current favourite is Yahoo Desktop because of the wide range of file formats that it supports.)
You can either comment to this post or email me at karen dot blakeman at rba dot co dot uk .

I remember with Blinx that if it found a file, it didn't tell you where if found it. Is this fixed now?

It would be good to hear about the comparison between them, I think most people are so used to Google and I know that Blinx's works very differently. Someone told me that most people don't know how to use it. I am probably one of them.
Can you post more on the blog about this?

Matthew, Adriana,
Thanks for both your comments.
Matthew - re Blinkx not telling you where it found the file, I don't know if this is now fixed. I am downloading the most recent versions of the desktop tools and will be re-testing them over the next 6 weeks so I'll make sure I check out your query.
Adriana - yes, Blinkx is different in its approach to desktop search from the rest. I will be re-testing it over the next weeks. You will have to come to the session for the details :-)

I haven't used yahoo. but i love Google. it's practically turned my laptop into a database. especially the second version that gives the searcher to search for special file types. i have more than 100,000 scientific articles (pdf) in my laptop. so eveytime i am going to do a literature search, instead of going to online databases and search, i first search my laptop with google desktop. amazing results and convinience.

Hamid,
Many thnks for the feedback on how you use desktop search. With that number of articles on your machine DTS must be invaluable. Even with the most well organised system of folders I cannot imagine being able to easily find an article by, say, author and/or keywords other than by searching the text of the documents. The closest I get to your type of application is when I am looking for some reference in the VAT regulations and I can't remember which of the 20-30 PDFs on my laptop it appeared in!

It's really about indexed and
unindexed Desktop Search.
Spectate Swamp Desktop Search
check my files at 20,000,000
characters per second and that
will just get faster and faster.
